- Yemisi Iranloye: Transforming Nigeria’s Cassava Industry and Empowering Rural Communities | Seed Network Nigeria
Yemisi Iranloye: Transforming Nigeria’s Cassava Industry and Empowering Rural Communities Apr 21, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Copy link Yemisi Iranloye, founder and CEO of Psaltry International Limited, is widely recognized as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s agro-processing sector. Often referred to as the “Cassava Queen,” Iranloye has redefined the possibilities of cassava by building a business that not only adds significant value to this staple crop but also uplifts thousands of rural families across the country . Building an Inclusive Agro-Processing Model Established in 2005 in Ado-Awaye, Oyo State, Psaltry International Limited set out to transform cassava from a subsistence crop into a source of high-value industrial products. Today, Psaltry processes over 10,000 tons of cassava annually, generating more than $12 million in revenue and supplying major clients such as Nestlé, Unilever, and Nigerian Breweries. The company’s product line includes food-grade cassava starch, high-quality cassava flour, and, most notably, Africa’s first cassava-based sorbitol—a healthier sweetener used in toothpaste, pharmaceuticals, and beverages. Iranloye’s approach is rooted in an inclusive business model that places smallholder farmers at the center. By working with over 5,000 farmers, Psaltry ensures a reliable supply of raw materials while providing these farmers with fair prices, training, and improved livelihoods. This model has had a ripple effect, raising the income and living standards of more than 100,000 families in the region. From Biochemistry to Industry Leadership Iranloye’s journey began with a degree in food biochemistry, followed by postgraduate studies in biochemistry and nutrition. Her early career at Ekha Agro-Processing Ltd exposed her to the vast commercial potential of cassava. Driven by a vision to make a difference, she gradually acquired land in rural Oyo State, eventually relocating from Lagos to build her farm and processing facility from the ground up. Despite significant challenges—including unreliable electricity, water scarcity, and poor road infrastructure—she persisted. By prioritizing proximity to raw materials and investing in community infrastructure, Iranloye overcame these obstacles and established a thriving enterprise. Innovation and Impact Psaltry International’s commitment to quality and innovation has set new standards in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. The company’s sorbitol refinery, the first in Africa and the second largest in the world, produces 25 tons of sorbitol daily, reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports and saving millions in foreign exchange. This achievement underscores Iranloye’s focus on value addition, export potential, and sustainable business practices. A Model for Sustainable Development Iranloye’s leadership extends beyond business success. By integrating smallholder farmers into the value chain, investing in local communities, and championing sustainable agricultural practices, she has created a blueprint for inclusive growth in Africa’s agro-processing industry. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of visionary leadership and the impact of empowering rural communities. Looking Ahead With a strong foundation and a clear vision, Yemisi Iranloye and Psaltry International continue to drive innovation in Nigeria’s cassava industry, inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs to see agriculture as a path to prosperity and national development. comments debug Comments (1) Write a comment Write a comment Sort by: Newest puti Aug 06, 2025 It’s inspiring to see how Yemisi Iranloye integrates smallholder farmers into a sustainable value chain it telkom Like Reply Other News Inside the Seed Nigeria April Members' Hangout: An Evening of Connection, Insight, and Shared Experience There are moments within our network that go beyond structured sessions and formal engagements, moments where connection becomes more natural, conversations more open, and the value of community more evident. The event officially kicked off with a welcome address from Dr. Oluwatomi Kogo, Managing Director, Iwosan Lagoon Outpatient Clinic & Iwosan Lagoon Wellness Centre , who set the tone for the day. Dr. Oluwatomi Kogo Her opening remarks were both grounding and insightful, reminding women of the importance of being intentional about their health. President Omolola Ajani speaking to the members and guests One of the most impactful moments of the day came as Dr. Kogo returned for a deeper session on women’s health. She provided an extensive and enlightening breakdown of key topics, including reproductive health, menopause, and the different stages women experience. The session was both educational and empowering, equipping attendees with knowledge many had not previously explored in depth. This created a safe and reflective space where women could not only learn but also internalize and relate these insights to their daily lives. Before transitioning into activities, attendees were treated to light refreshments, including parfait, drinks, and a warm serving of bread and tomato soup prepared by the Chef who gave a breakdown of the ingredients used in the meal and their health benefits. - Chanja Datti at 10: Pioneering Recycling and Sustainability in Africa | Seed Network Nigeria
Chanja Datti at 10: Pioneering Recycling and Sustainability in Africa Aug 22, 2025 Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Copy link At the helm of Chanja Datti is Funto Boroffice , a visionary leader whose passion for sustainability and innovation has shaped the organization into a model of impact and resilience. Funto Boroffice, Founder and CEO of Chanja Datti Under her guidance, Chanja Datti has grown from a bold idea into a movement that not only tackles Nigeria’s waste management challenges but also empowers communities, creates green jobs, and inspires global conversations around sustainability. For ten years, Chanja Datti has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s recycling journey. Since its inception in 2015, it has grown from a modest endeavor into a transformative force in Nigeria’s recycling and environmental advocacy landscape. Now celebrating a decade of impactful work, the organization continues to expand its reach and vision. This time, it is bridging the gap between sustainability and storytelling with its inaugural African SDGs Film Festival, scheduled for September 11-12, 2025, at Silverbird Cinema in Abuja. This pioneering festival aims to harness the power of film to inspire action and raise awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative has already attracted significant global interest, receiving over 2,000 submissions from filmmakers worldwide. Locally, the excitement is just as palpable, with more than 1,500 participants already registered to attend. Chanja Datti is optimistic that this flagship event will not only catalyze crucial conversations around the SDGs but also provide vital support and a powerful platform for grassroots filmmakers across Africa. This foray into creative arts is the latest in a series of achievements for the organization. Chanja Datti Launches Pilot Recycling Plant in Abuja Just recently, Chanja Datti, in a landmark collaboration with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), officially took over a new site designated for a pilot mini-recycling plant in the capital city. With civil works already underway, this new facility is set to significantly boost recycling capacity in Abuja, create new green jobs, and strengthen the market for local aggregators and women recyclers, further cementing the framework for a robust circular economy in the FCT. Chanja Datti Secures TRANSFORM Grant Fueling this expansion is a significant endorsement from TRANSFORM, a joint initiative by Unilever, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and EY. Chanja Datti was recently selected as a recipient of grant funding and business support from the program. This vital support will enable the scaling of its decentralized model by setting up Micro-Recycling Plants (MRPs) closer to waste collection points. This innovative approach is designed to enhance recycling efficiency while directly empowering informal waste workers and creating sustainable economic opportunities in low and middle-income. Looking Ahead This string of achievements is a powerful culmination of a decade of dedication. What began as a goal to "do better for our planet" has matured into a decade of tangible impact, strategic partnerships, and consistent progress. As Chanja Datti celebrates its 10th anniversary, it isn't pausing to rest. It is pushing forward with renewed energy, building platforms that ensure the next decade will leave an even greater legacy for both people and planet. As Chanja Datti forges ahead into its next decade of impact, Funto Boroffice’s leadership remains a driving force, balancing bold innovation with deep purpose. Her commitment to building a circular economy and creating opportunities for everyday Nigerians underscores the organization’s mission: to leave behind a legacy where waste becomes wealth, communities thrive, and sustainability is more than a goal but rather, a way of life. comments debug Comments Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment.
