Why the Future of AI Still Belongs to People: Inside Seed Network Nigeria's Exclusive Workshop with Rajan Patel
Aug 20, 2026
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing the way businesses operate. From automating repetitive tasks to accelerating decision-making and unlocking new opportunities for innovation, AI is reshaping industries at an unprecedented pace. Yet, amid the excitement surrounding new technologies, one message resonated throughout Seed Network Nigeria's latest workshop: technology alone does not create impact. People do.
That philosophy formed the foundation of Design Thinking: Human-Centered Innovation in the Age of AI, an exclusive workshop hosted by Seed Network Nigeria in Lagos as part of Rajan Patel's visit to Stanford Seed chapters.

Facilitated by Rajan Patel, Director of Entrepreneurship and Management Programs at Stanford Seed, the workshop brought together more than 100 participants, including Seed members, their leadership teams, and invited guests, for a full day of immersive learning, collaboration, and practical experimentation.
The workshop reflected Seed Network Nigeria's ongoing commitment to equipping entrepreneurs and business leaders with world-class learning experiences that help them build stronger, more innovative organizations capable of thriving in an increasingly technology-driven world.

The day commenced with opening remarks from Toba Obaniyi, Communications Secretary of Seed Network Nigeria, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of embracing innovation while remaining committed to solving meaningful business challenges. He also shared what participants could expect from the highly interactive workshop.

Participants were also joined by Kate Selby, Network Administrator at Stanford Seed West Africa, and Folasade Ajdua-Frances, Business Transformation Advisor at Stanford Seed, whose presence further reflected Stanford Seed's continued investment in strengthening entrepreneurial leadership across Africa.
Among the distinguished participants was Roseline Ilori, Founder of Bridge 57 Solutions and a member of Seed Network Nigeria, who was a sponsor towards the workshop and attended alongside members of her team, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that continues to define the network.
Innovation Begins with Understanding People
From the opening moments of his presentation, Rajan Patel challenged participants to think differently about innovation.
Rather than beginning with technology, features, or products, he encouraged business leaders to start with people. Throughout the workshop, he repeatedly reinforced a simple but powerful principle:
"It's all about the people."
In a business environment where organizations often rush to implement the latest technologies, Rajan reminded participants that lasting innovation begins with understanding the needs, aspirations, and challenges of the people they serve.

He encouraged leaders to ask deeper questions before proposing solutions, emphasizing that businesses should focus on uncovering genuine human needs rather than becoming attached to preconceived ideas.
One of the workshop's central messages was clear:
Needs come before solutions.
Whether developing a product, introducing a new service, or integrating Artificial Intelligence into business operations, organizations that deeply understand their customers are far more likely to create meaningful and sustainable value.
Design Thinking Meets Artificial Intelligence
While Artificial Intelligence served as the context for the workshop, Design Thinking provided its foundation.
Participants explored how the two disciplines complement one another: Design Thinking provides the human-centered mindset needed to identify meaningful opportunities, while AI expands an organization's ability to explore ideas, generate insights, and accelerate execution.
Throughout the session, Rajan encouraged participants to think beyond what AI can do and instead focus on why it should be used.
One of the recurring themes was the importance of asking "why" before deciding "what" to build. Rather than leading with products or features, leaders were challenged to understand the purpose behind every innovation effort.
This mindset was reinforced through Stanford Seed's Design Thinking framework:
Listen. Think. Build.
Participants learned that effective innovation begins by listening deeply to customers and stakeholders, exploring possibilities through thoughtful experimentation, and building solutions that can be tested, refined, and continuously improved.
Learning by Doing
Far from being a traditional lecture, the workshop quickly evolved into an innovation laboratory.
Business leaders gathered around tables with laptops open, exchanging ideas, refining prompts, testing AI platforms, and working collaboratively to solve real business challenges.
One of the highlights of the day was the practical team exercise, where participants applied the concepts discussed throughout the session to their own organizations.
Working in groups, they learned how to create effective AI prompts, explore different AI tools, and build applications tailored to the specific needs of their businesses using AI-powered platforms introduced during the workshop. Participants were encouraged to experiment freely, challenge assumptions, and learn through action rather than waiting for perfect answers.
As Rajan explained throughout the workshop, innovation is driven by curiosity and continuous experimentation. There is no single "right" answer, only opportunities to build, test, learn, and improve.
For many participants, this practical session became the defining moment of the workshop, transforming abstract concepts into tangible business applications they could immediately begin implementing within their organizations.

AI Is Here to Stay
A recurring message throughout the day was that Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future trend, it is today's business reality.
Rather than viewing AI with uncertainty or hesitation, Rajan encouraged participants to embrace experimentation.
He demonstrated how leaders can leverage AI to think more creatively, generate ideas faster, develop business applications, improve decision-making, and enhance customer experiences. However, he also emphasized that AI delivers the greatest value when guided by clear human purpose, quality data, thoughtful prompting, and human judgment.
Participants also explored how effective prompting significantly improves AI outputs, reinforcing another key lesson from the workshop:
"Prompting is key."
The message was clear: leaders should not be afraid to explore new tools. Instead, they should cultivate a mindset of curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning.
More Than Technology
While Artificial Intelligence remained central to the discussions, the workshop ultimately became a conversation about leadership.

Participants were reminded that successful organizations are built not simply through technology, but through empathy, shared purpose, and a commitment to solving real problems for real people.
As Rajan demonstrated through stories from his own entrepreneurial journey and his work with Stanford Seed, meaningful innovation occurs when leaders remain deeply connected to the people they serve while embracing new possibilities created by technology.
He concluded with a leadership principle that captured the spirit of the day:
"Leadership is the act of mobilizing people towards a common purpose."
Building the Future Together
As participants departed, they left with far more than notes and presentation slides. They left with practical frameworks, hands-on experience using emerging AI tools, and renewed confidence to experiment, innovate, and lead their organizations through change.
More importantly, they left with a reminder that although Artificial Intelligence will continue to evolve, the businesses that thrive will be those that never lose sight of the people they exist to serve.

Through initiatives like this workshop, Seed Network Nigeria continues to connect its members with global thought leaders, practical learning experiences, and a community of entrepreneurs committed to building businesses that create lasting economic and social impact.
As technology continues to reshape the future of work, one message from the workshop will remain relevant long after the laptops have been closed: "Innovation begins and ends with people".
